| A Respond to Musawa's Urgent Press Release |
Earlier this month, Musawa sent an urgent press release to his honor Mr. President Mahmoud Abbas-Abu Mazen upon the efforts and mediations carried out by some political personalities requesting for the president’s permission to approve the extension of the tenure period of Mr. Issa Abu Shara-Chief of the Higher Judicial Council, who has exceeded the age of 70.
As a respond to this urgent press release, Mr. Mahmoud Abbas-President of the PA has announced a decision, in which the tenure period of Mr. Issa Abu Sharar-Chief of the Higher Judicial Council shall be extended. The decision applies to article 34 of the applicable law on Judicial Authority stating that: “no one beyond the age of seventy (70) shall be allowed to remain in the position of a Judge or be appointed thereto.” Furthermore, Mr. Abu Mazen declared that he has appointed Mr. Farid Jallad- Legal Councilor of PA President as the new Chief of the Higher Judicial Council after Mr. Abu Sharar.
It is worth mentioning that during the early 2009, several arguments have been generated regarding the real age of Mr. Abu Sharar. While some have argued that the official documents at the Palestinian and Jordanian Department of Civil Affairs state that Mr. Abu Sharar was bron on 1/1/1939; others claim that according the files at the Employees Bureau, Mr. Abu Sharar was born on 28/11/1939; and therefore, he turned on (70) on 28/11/2009.
